LEROY — Pine River was at the Kent City Invitational on Friday, April 23, and the 4x200 relay team of Kendra Montague, Sydney Edstrom, Avery Sumpter and Grace Beebe took second, freshman Hailey Wanstead was fifth in the mile; Montague sixth in the 100-meter dash; Abigail Dennis fourth in the 400 dash, and sixth in the 200 meters, and was part of the 4x400 relay team (with Montague, Edstrom, and Beebe) that placed third.
Pine River hosted NMC and McBain Tuesday night, April 22, in Highland Conference track action. McBain boys and girls both won against Pine River and NMC, while Pine River boys and girls both took a win over NMC.
Headlining for Pine River girls was Dennis, who won the 400 and was a part of the winning 4x200 team (with Sumpter, Montague, and Edstrom) and 4x400 (with Montague, Edstrom, and Beebe). Montague also won the 200 with a personal best time.
“It was great to finally be able to host a meet on our new track, and share the great facility with other teams,” Eric Gebhard, Pine River varsity girls coach said. “The weather hasn’t been kind to us so far this season, but the athletes took full advantage of better conditions tonight and competed well.”
Pine River sweeps Manistee
LEROY — The Bucks won 13-1 and 23-6 at Manistee on Friday, April 26.
Lane Ruppert was the winning pitcher in the first game and Kei Deguchi was winning pitcher in the second game. The Bucks had many hitters with multiple hits and extra base hits.
Evart sweeps Montabella
BLANCHARD — Evart’s softball team swept Montabella on Friday, April 26, 19-7 and 20-2.
Carlie Gostlin was the winning pitcher in the first game with four strikeouts. Felicia Nelson had five singles. McKenzie Kimball had three singles. Kylie Dorn and Skyler Baumgardner had two singles apiece. Livia Hopkins and Deanna Conklin both had a single and double.
Ava Retlewski was the winning pitcher in the second game “with some solid defense behind her,” Evart coach Amanda Brown said. “She had two strikeouts.”
Skylar Baumgardner had three singles and a double and Hopkins had two singles and a double for Evart. Retlewski had a single and double. Baumgardner, Dorn and Kimball had two singles apiece. Deana Conklin had a single and three stolen bases.
Evart is 4-12.
It was nice to see the girls come together and play as a team,” Brown said. “It was fun to watch.”

LEROY — Emma Whitley was the winning pitcher in the first game, striking out seven while allowing six hits and three walks in action on April 24.
She had a single, double and triple. Logan Powell had three hits. Kim Hill had two hits and an RBI.
“Emma pitched really well,” Pine River coach Mike Nelson said. “It was probably her best outing of the year.”
Hill started the second game and went five innings, striking out five, walking two and giving up three hits. It was 6-6 when she left the game. Whitley came in relief. Evart scored four runs to take the win.
“Our defense fell apart,” Nelson said. “Evart put the ball in play.”
Whitley and Jaden Draper had two hits apiece.
“We struggled against Evart’s pitcher,” Nelson said. “We had 11 flyouts. We struggled defensively.”
Pine River is 6-6.
Reed City 7, Lakeview 0
LAKEVIEW — Taylor Harrison and Claudia Francke scored the first two goals in Reed City’s win on Wednesday, April 24. Paige Lofquist scored the third goal, assisted by Mackenzie Wein. Karlie Kearns scored, assisted by Taylor Hilliard. Olivia Addington scored the fifth goal. Lofquist and Taylor Hillard had the next two goals with Kearns assisting on both.
“We passed well and finished better vs. just shooting,” Reed City coach Andrea Pollaski said. “Lakeview had quite a few injured players.
