Pine River renews YMCA tutoring program
LEROY — Pine River Area Elementary students will continue to have tutoring opportunities after school from YMCA After-School Tutoring Program.
Members of the Pine River Area Schools Board of Education unanimously voted to keep the program during its meeting on Oct. 13 after Cadillac Area YMCA Executive Director Dan Smith and program director Mike Kelso presented the re-implementation proposal. The tutoring program assists students who are struggling in math by giving them fun ways to learn different strategies. It also provides a healthy snack and time for physical activity. To check student progress and see where other improvements are needed, the children are tested every two weeks.
Through June 30, the YMCA will provide tutoring staff and physical play staff, allow up to 24 students to participate in a six-week session, will work with PRAS to write grants, follow the direction of PRAS teachers assigned to the session and will abide by all district rules and procedures, and provide transportation home for any student in the program through the Mecosta Osceola Transit Authority.
School board member Ron Schalow abstained from voting as to not create suspicions of a conflict of interest due to his title as MOTA executive director.
