Pine River band raising support for trip

LEROY — Pine River band members will travel to Cedar Point to march in a parade this summer, but they need help getting there.

Seventy-two members of the seventh through 12th grade band are signed up to enjoy the two-day trip June 9-10, which will be the first trip the band has taken in many years.

“It’s just something extra for us to do to help bond the group,” said band director Jessica Miller.

To raise money for the trip, students are participating in several fundraisers including selling chocolate, gathering pledges for a lock-in on Friday, Feb. 24, and hosting a dinner and variety show near the end of May to showcase student talent.

When the weather warms up the band will begin practicing outside to prepare for the trip to Cedar Point, which will be a unique experience for the youngest students.

“For the seventh and eighth graders this is their real first marching experience,” Miller said.

The band has an upcoming concert on March 2 at the District Band Festival at Big Rapids High School. The middle school band plays at 4 p.m. and the high school band plays at 7 p.m.
