Pie in the eye for the sake of books

Evart Library fundraiser nets $10,000

EVART – The Evart Public Library will boost operational funds after $10,000 was raised through the fundraiser and auction at the Moose Lodge Saturday.

The library surpassed its goal of raising $6,000 to makeup for operational expenses lost through state cuts.

Evart Library director Lilas VanScoyoc was thrilled with the turnout and community support at the event. She estimated the event drew more than 300 people and was told by Moose Lodge administrators the event drew the largest number of people they had seen at the facility.

“We had a fantastic turnout. It just blew us way,” VanScoyoc said. “(It shows) this library is important to the community.”

Evart resident Dick Douglas came to the event to support the library and said it is an important part of the city.

“The library is a good thing for the community so we want to make sure it keeps up with the books and media and everything it needs,” Douglas said.

The library raised $6,000 prior to the auction through solicited donations from other businesses and organizations, and an additional $4,000 through items sold at the event.

The fundraiser auctioned items such as a 3-hour Grand Traverse Balloon ride for two for $330, a one-week stay at Boyne Mountain resort for $700, a photo of Ndamukong Suh, Detroit Lions football player, as well as numerous pies and gift cards.

Bob Foster was the highest bidder for the last item up for bid, a pie to be thrown in the face of Evart Police Chief Zack Szakacs.

Foster said throwing the pie was fun and worth the $180.
