LEROY — Pine River’s wrestling team entered the team state on Friday in Kalamazoo as the No. 5 seed.

But by the time the weekend was over, wrestlers like Andrew Park were hoping the Bucks would have the state trophy.

Pine River lost in the semifinals but still had a huge season.

Park was one of four Pine River regional champs at the individual meet. He’s at 140 pounds and has a 52-1 record.

“It was cool to win the regional for my third year in a row,” Park said.

It’s Park’s best season in his high school career so far.

“It’s been a matter of getting in the room early in the morning with (coach Tim Jones) and having those extra workouts,” Park said.

His only loss was to an opponent from Shelby in Grand Haven. But this particular opponent will wrestle in Division 3 at the state finals March 2-3 at Ford Field. Pine River is in Division 4.

Park’s highest individual performance has been fourth. He wants to be a state champ this year.

“I’m getting better on my bottom work,” he said
