Out to lunch with Joe: Seven Slot Grille

REED CITY — When it comes to locally-owned hidden gems that can serve up some quality grub to its customers, one should look no further than the Seven Slot Grille.

Located on Chestnut Street in downtown Reed City, the Seven Slot Grille is now one of the first things that come to mind when I hear the words “American diner.”

While it has been known as and operated under the name Seven Slot Grille since 2008, the building, which is the home of the restaurant, has been a diner of some sort for nearly 50 years.

As a result, the inside of the Seven Slot Grille has a great deal of character and charm to it and is a perfect local spot to grab a quick, delicious bite to eat.

It’s places like this that really make you feel valued as a patron, whether you are a regular customer or someone like me, who made their first visit Friday afternoon.

A warm smile and a genuine “How’s it going today,” can go a long way, believe-it-or-not.

This was precisely what I was greeted with upon making my way through the back entrance on a damp and rainy fall afternoon in Reed City.

Bright lights made the hardwood interior gleam even on such a cloudy day, and classic rock music filled the room as I made my way to my table.

I was quite impressed with the menu offered at the Seven Slot Grille, which offered a huge range of breakfast, lunch and dinner favorites.

From burgers, to omelettes, to burritos, breakfast burritos and beyond, these folks definitely have all of their bases covered.

For me, it was the omelette section of the menu that grabbed my attention more than the others — no offense to the other parts of the menu by any means.

There were easily more than a dozen different styles of omelette to choose from, which is probably the most I’ve ever seen on any menu.

After looking up and down all of my omelette options, I decided to go with what the folks at the Seven Slot Grille refer to as the momlet, complete with bacon, sausage, perfectly fluffy eggs, and four pieces of toast.

You have my attention.

I will say that I made my way through at least 80% of this grand momlet, a figure that I am quite proud of, and willing to try and improve upon in future.

But then again, I don’t want to snub the other sections of the menu on consecutive visits.
