Out to lunch with Joe: Mr. Pib's Restaurant

LEROY — I don’t often make my way to beautiful, remote township of LeRoy, but from now on, I know I’ll always have a dependable spot for a quick and delicious bite to eat when I do.

In case you didn’t know, I am referring to Mr. Pib’s Restaurant, which is located on N. Mackinaw Trail roughly seven minutes down the way from Pine River High School.

This place certainly falls under my personal category of hidden gems, but I soon got the feeling that Mr. Pib’s is virtually the exact opposite of hidden, as far as the locals are concerned.

Offering a variety of items on its menu, Mr. Pib’s is actually an anagram for the most popular dishes served up, day in and day out.

P stands for pizza, I stands for ice cream, B is for burgers and, finally, S stands for subs.

Of course, these familiar staples are far from the only dishes that are made available to patrons every day.

During the morning hours, the breakfast menu is available; after looking it over and seeing some of the breakfast options at Mr Pib’s, I wish I had visited earlier in the day.

Although, if I had done that, it technically wouldn’t have been lunch, would it?

On this particular afternoon, I decided to go with the barbecue ribs, complete with a side of fries and a warm, fresh-baked dinner roll to hold me over until the main dish arrived.

I could hear my grandma Judd’s voice (may she rest comfortably in peace) say: “Now, don’t fill up on a lot of bread,” as I buttered up and took my first delicious bite of the roll.

As a child, I always shrugged it off but, at almost 28 years of age as I prepared for this slab of ribs, her words rang out truer than ever before.

Luckily, I did not have to wait very long for this absolutely stunning plate of barbecue ribs and fries cooked exactly how I like them, like when you get them from the fair, but even better.

The ribs were fantastic and the barbecue sauce used at Mr. Pib’s was a nice addition.

I powered my way through most of these ribs, and then realized I needed to be back at my apartment within the next half hour for a virtual work meeting.

I’m being completely honest when I say this, but I was actually a little bummed out that I couldn’t finish the rest of my meal at my table inside of the restaurant.

Of course, I got a to-go box and promptly devoured the rest for dinner later Friday after a wet and cold night on the football field, but everything about the place and meal was so nice.

Definitely better ribs than most you’ll get at a chain restaurant, that’s for sure.

I would highly recommend making the trip out to LeRoy for a meal at Mr. Pibs as soon as you can.

Unrelated side note: Mr. Pib is way better than Dr. Pepper, and I will gladly debate anyone who begs to differ.

Happy Halloween, everyone. Thanks for putting up with me.
