OSCEOLA COUNTY — Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have given their lives for the United States, and Osceola County cities are prepared with events to honor such individuals and bring people together.

Reed City will host a Memorial Day parade at 9:15 a.m. on Monday, which will begin at the Reed City Depot, travel west on Upton Avenue, south on Sears Street and south on Lincoln Avenue to Woodland Cemetery.

“It’s been a tradition for many years,” said Reed City Chamber of Commerce Director Suzie Williams. “It’s a time to come out and honor those who have given of themselves for our country.”

A speaker and a band will be present at the cemetery, where a short ceremony and tribute will take place.

The weekend also promises other events to help Evart residents and visitors remember fallen veterans and pick up some treasures.

On Monday, members of the VFW Post 7979 and Thomas E. Smith AM VETS Post 11 will come together for a 10 a.m. ceremony at Joseph W. Guyton Park.

VFW Post 7979 Commander Allen Rohen said a 21-gun salute, prayers from a chaplain and the playing of “Taps” willbe part of the ceremony.

“Memorial Day is the only day of the year specifically to honor victims of all of the wars,” said Rohen. “I hope the attendees realize a lot of people have made sacrifices, and it’s nice to honor those who have died for their country.”

In addition to the ceremony, the veterans will place 675 flags within Forest Hill Cemetery for the holiday.

The fifth annual flea market and yard sale, hosted by the Evart Chamber of Commerce, also is open for business from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Evart Air Industrial Park. A growing event, it will offer deal-seekers a variety of items from close to 70 vendors from the local area and beyond.

Flea market and yard sale organizer Donna Willis said the event attracts vendors from areas outside of Evart, including Traverse City and Muskegon. Shoppers can have fun browsing booths featuring a variety of items such as tools, clothing, furniture, jewelry, crafts and more.

“It’s a fun day. You get to meet new people and see the same people, and there are good deals for shoppers,” said Willis.

She said her family has made the weekend an incentive to reunite and expects others do, too.

Vendors still can sign up to be part of the event for a $20 fee. For more information, contact Cathy Britz at (231) 499-8655 or Donna Willis at (231) 734-2023. Applications also can be found at www.evartchamberofcommerce.com.
