OSCEOLA COUNTY — Residents who participate in the annual American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Osceola County will need to travel outside the county in order to do so.

Usually taking place in June, officials decided not to have an event in Osceola County this year, said Amanda Bosherz, American Cancer Society division communications manager.

"As good stewards, the American Cancer Society continually reviews ways to hold the line on expenses so that even more of the money each participant raises goes to our lifesaving programs," she said via email. "As a result, we decided to discontinue Relay For Life of Osceola County. We expect this change will create a larger, even more spirited gathering of Relayers who share the same purpose: to finish the fight against cancer."

All of the money raised during Relay for Life events goes toward cancer research, education and prevention. In addition to raising funds, the event raises the spirits of everyone involved, according to the American Cancer Society.

Bosherz said residents are invited to participate in Relay events in Mecosta or Wexford counties.

Mecosta County's Relay for Life event will be from 5 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, at Hemlock Park. Those interested should contact Taylor Doty at (616) 551-4065.

Those wishing to participate in Wexford County's Relay for Life should contact Karen Kessler at (231) 429-5859. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday, June 16 at the Cadillac High School track.

"We’ve come a long way in the fight against cancer, and the American Cancer Society has been looking at ways to further accelerate our progress," Bosherz said. "An important part of this process has been identifying ways we can stretch donations to help the most people, end the most suffering and save the most lives."
