New WISE director meets with Big Rapids community
Reed City, White Cloud meet and greets also planned
BIG RAPIDS — Jane Currie, the new executive director of Women’s Information Service, Inc., was officially introduced to the Big Rapids community on Aug. 13.
The day offered local officials and residents the opportunity to introduce themselves to Currie at a meet-and-greet event at the WISE office in downtown Big Rapids.
"The community has opened its arms up to me and I'm very grateful," Currie added.
WISE provides crisis intervention and support services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence by empowering individuals, children and families.
"I'm learning how to best build relationships for the communities at large," Currie said. "As the word gets out and our populations continue to increase, the demand is unfortunately there, but thank goodness we have communities that support us and get that word out and to get the proper help to the people who most need it. I'm very encouraged by the opportunities that have already come up in the very short time I've been here to build those resources. It's a real privilege to be here."
The former nurse and ministry administrator has past experience placing domestic violence victims in safe areas. Through other life experiences, she became aware of how important the work done by WISE is. Now, she's excited to be a part of it and benefit others who need help.
While in her new position, Currie said she has a few set goals she'd like WISE to accomplish.
"Initially, I just want to connect to the community," she said. "We want to get to the grassroots organizations and build those bridges within the community because having WISE here, I think, makes a community stronger and having those relations here is a strength to those communities. We want to partner with other organizations and business, building that strength within our community not only to get the word out about WISE, but also to form a partnership."
A second meet-and-greet event will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, at Pere Marquette Bistro and Catering, 102 E. Upton St., in Reed City. The final meet and greet will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, at Family Health Care, 1035 Wilcox Ave., in White Cloud.
