Local church to hand out school supplies

REED CITY — Necessary back-to-school supplies can put a dent in anyone’s household budget, but members of the Reed City Church of the Nazarene are trying to help.

“We have a lot of teachers in our congregation and this is what sparked us doing this years ago. We know there is a need,” said Church of the Nazarene office manager Bernice Graham.

From 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Vic’s Supermarket, the church members will host a back to school give-away for all ages. Items offered include crayons, rulers, notebooks, binders, pencils scissors and more will be sorted by grade level at the event to make it easy for parents and children to find what they need. Supplies will serve those from kindergarten through high school.

Graham said the give-away has become a tradition at the church and participation is growing every year. Money through fundraising efforts has been collected for months in order to purchase the supplies and teachers have provided guidance on what specific items are needed.

“We kind of have it down to a science now,” she added with a laugh.

In the past, the church has served 400 students. This year, more than $1,000 worth of supplies are available for distribution.

“I hope people know that a church cares about the community and the children,” Graham said.
