Leadership class celebrates graduation, solves crime

OSCEOLA COUNTY – Sally Spirit wanted revenge on Bobby Backer after he dumped her to take Dolly Dancer to the Mayhem High School homecoming dance.

“You’re going to be sorry, Bobby,” Spirit threatened from across the dinner table.

When Backer suddenly died moments later, his former girlfriend was a main suspect in the murder.

Spirit and Backer were characters played by Osceola Leadership Summit participant Molly Cataldo and facilitator Al Weinberg as part of a murder mystery party celebrating the group’s graduation from the program.

The ten program participants came together to culminate their experiences over the past nine months, sharing laughs, learning about their county and forming lasting bonds with each other.

“I don’t know if I could pick a better group of people to have for the first year (of the program),” Weinberg said. “I feel really blessed and honored to have been a part of this.”

The Osceola Leadership Summit began its “maiden voyage” in September with the goal of connecting leaders with their county to develop their leadership skills and giving them an understanding of their community’s strengths.

One day each month for the past nine months, the group has traveled around the state and county to learn about education at area schools, visit the state capital to gain a better understanding of state government, role play local health care facilities to experience health services and heard from local media representatives for an inside look at print and broadcast media.

Last Thursday’s session included testing their knowledge gained in program with games including a “name that citizen”

photo guessing game.

Next week, the leadership class will present their group project as they host the Taste of Osceola fundraiser event, inviting restaurants from all over the county to display their best offerings at the Community Building at the Osceola County 4-H FFA fairgrounds in Evart on May 29.
