Kyle Stokes set for big season
EVART — If Evart’s boys track team hopes to be a contender again this season in the Highland Conference and Division 4 regionals, athletes like junior Kyle Stokes will again be counted upon heavily to score critical points for the Wildcats.
His sophomore track season ended at the state finals in the Division 4 state meet.
He was on a 800-meter relay team that was sixth in 1:33.80 and included Cody Pritchard, Scott Martin and Danny Griffin. The same foursome was fourth in the 400-meter relay in 44.62 seconds.
The team had finished first at most of its meets during the season. He was also fifth on the 1,600-meter relay squad that was fifth in 3:47.84 and included Pritchard, Ben Randall and Griffin.
Stokes also had a strong season in the sprints. In the 100, he was third at the MITCA Division 4 team state meet with a personal record of 11.44. His personal record was 23.08 seconds in the 200-meter dash and he was second at the regional meet. He placed seventh at 23.23 seconds at the Division 4 state finals.
Coming into this season, Stokes cited his performance at Alma College in 23.08 seconds as his PR in the 200, when he was coming off an injury. He’s looking for a 22.5 this season.
“I need to train a lot harder than I did last year,” he said. “I have a good start. I want to improve coming out of the blocks.”
The 100 is his second best event. He’s looking to go 11-flat this year.
“We’re a little short in (the sprints) this year,” he said. “I think we’ll do all right.”
Stokes is looking to contend in the league and regionals as a team.
Evart is scheduled to run in the Lakeview Invitational on Friday.
