Kicking off summer fitness
REED CITY — As the school year comes to an end and summer nears, children will no longer receive that one hour a day gym class that keeps them active.
This is when gym teachers from GT Norman Elementary School hope the education they have given children throughout the year will inspire them to continue being active throughout the summer. One annual event the staff organizes is a school-wide Nutrirun.
Doug Emington, Brian Hammond and Lisa Macdonald set up a course for children to run starting at Rambadt Park and along the trail to Westerberg Park. Parent volunteers cheer runners on and keep them safe during the event. At the finish line, runners were rewarded with water, fresh fruit and playtime.
Throughout the park, students participated in games of tennis, softball, basketball, Frisbee, soccer and corn hole toss.
