Howard, Pummell chosen for second interviews in interim superintendent search

EVART — Following an extensive interview process over the course of two evenings, interim superintendent finalists Shirley Howard and Doniel Pummell were selected by the Evart Public Schools Board of Education to be interviewed a second time.

After reviewing 11 candidates at a board meeting on Oct. 12 with Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District Superintendent Curtis Finch, finalists were narrowed to four. Howard, Pummel, Ron Kraft and Steven Westhoff were interviewed for the position by the board of education on Oct. 15 and Oct. 19.

Board members discussed each candidate and through a ranking system, chose their top two candidates, which were Howard and Pummell. They said they liked Howard's local knowledge and willingness to collaborate, while they appreciated Pummell's education philosophy and drive to become further educated.

The board also voted in favor of hosting second interviews, as many board members stated they were torn between the two finalists.

The next round of interviews are expected to take place at 4 and 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the board room at Evart Middle School. An alternate time and date is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The chosen finalist will serve as interim superintendent from Jan. 1 through June 30, and can apply to be the district's permanent superintendent while the search for such a candidate takes place during that time period. Finch is assisting with the search, a service free to charge to the district.
