Historical society-sponsored mural completed

EVART — After months of planning and approximately one month of painting, the Evart Area Historical Society sponsored community mural is complete.

Krysta Leutz, historical society member and art education student at Central Michigan University, planned the mural as part of an independent study project for school. She hoped to capture some of Evart’s history and some of what residents and visitors see today.

“The mural is sharing our history and a place of pride in our community,” Leutz said. “People who are just passing by or who are stopped at the light can see how important our history is to us.”

The mural, located at the corner of US-10 and Main Street, depicts an old locomotive pulling a logging car, as well as a forest scene, complete with wildlife and a campsite. The Muskegon River is shown flowing across the bottom of the wall, with a boater navigating the waters.

Volunteers primed the wall, traced the design and donated hours in the sun to paint the mural. Leutz plans to use the experience she gained in this project in her future classroom.
