High school staff hosts Detroit Lions on Saturday

EVART – Players from the Detroit Lions football team will be taking on the staff of Evart High School in a thrilling game of basketball at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

This will be the second time the Lions have visited Evart for the event to support the Evart Athletic Boosters Club.

Last year’s event was a huge success with the Evart High School gymnasium being packed and concessions sold out. Organizers expect this year’s game to be just as exciting.

Ten players from the Detroit Lions came to Evart High School and the boosters club raised a few thousand dollars. The event was one of the booster club’s largest fundraisers.

“(The Detroit Lions) get the kids involved too,” said Kathy Wirth, Evart boosters club member. “It’s a lot of fun.”

At half-time of the game, the team will host activities for children such as a three-point shoot out and a paper air plane toss as well as some new activities this year. The players also will ask children to help during the game.

Audience members also will have the opportunity to get an autograph from each of the Detroit Lions players, which was a highlight of the event last year.

“I was impressed,” said Evart Public Schools athletic director Randy Kruse of the autograph-signing during last year’s event. “They sat there until every kid who wanted an autograph got an autograph. It was a lot of fun.”

The alumni game will tip off at 4:30 and the staff vs. Detroit Lions game will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Evart High School gymnasium.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $5 at any of the Evart school buildings or from Evart Boosters members. Tickets at the door cost $7. For more information or to play in one of the games contact Wirth at (231) 734-5595 or Steve Kitchen at (231) 920-0018.
