Hazardous waste collection set for Saturday

BIG RAPIDS — Know what to do with those containers of used motor oil in the garage or that nearly-empty canister of deck stain from that project 10 years ago? If not, a trip to the annual hazardous waste disposal collection on Saturday, Oct. 12 is in order.

Automotive products and fuels, such as antifreeze, diesel fuel and transmission fluid; paint products, such as deck stain, lead-based paints and paint strippers; yard and garden products, such as insect foggers, pesticides and mouse and rat poison; and cleaning products, such as dry cleaning solutions, floor and furniture polish and rust removers are all accepted at the drop off sites.

Other items eligible for collection include fluorescent light bulbs, moth balls, unused medication and thermostats and thermometers.

The free collection effort will take place between 9 a.m. and noon and offers collections sites at the following locations in Lake, Mecosta and Osceola counties:

  •   Wenger Pavilion, located behind Jones Ice Cream Parlor in downtown Baldwin.
  •   The Mecosta County Fairgrounds, located at 540 West Ave. in Big Rapids.
  •   The Osceola County Road Commission North Facility, located at 13353 20 Mile Road in Sherman Township.

Items not eligible for drop off include tires, fire extinguishers, automotive batteries, construction waste and rechargeable batteries.

Last year, 20,801 pounds of household hazardous materials were collected from 605 households in the three counties during the collection. The event is sponsored by the Mecosta and Osceola Lake conservation districts.
