Great American Crossroads Celebration kicks off Thursday

REED CITY — From carnival rides to a car show, softball tournaments to a street party downtown, there won’t be a shortage of activities in Reed City this weekend.

Beginning on Thursday, Aug. 17, the Great American Crossroads Celebration kicks off with an Art in the Park painting activity from 10 a.m. to noon at Rambadt Park. The Reed City District Library book sale begins at 11 a.m., lasting until 7 p.m. at the library.

The traditional Miss Reed City Pageant starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Crossroads Theater.

The Crossroads Celebration features numerous events each day until the festivities wrap up on Sunday Aug. 20, said Chastity Eads, executive director of the Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s just a great weekend that showcases our park system, the Reed City downtown and so much more,” Eads said. “There’s a great overall community feeling throughout the event.”

On Friday, the library’s book sale continues for the second day, this time from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Crossroads Celebration kicks into high gear with the start of the softball tournaments, the parade and the Crossroads Street Party.

The Crossroads Street Party, located on Upton Avenue, is hosted by the Buckboard Bar, Sunny’s Bar & Grill and Reed City Brewery from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

“One of the bigger changes this year is the addition of Reed City Brewery, a new business in downtown, to the Street Party,” Eads said. “What used to be a beverage tent in previous years is now a street party, which has worked out really well.”

The Street Party will feature yard games, a DJ and live music and the Reed City High School All Class Reunion. Beverages and food can be purchased at the three business establishments during the Street Party.

After 9 p.m., the Street Party will only be open to those who are 21 years of age or older. Following the event, transportation within a 12 mile radius of Reed City will be available for those who wish to use it.

The Hometown Proud Parade begins at 6 p.m. on Upton Avenue. The softball tournaments begin at the same time at Westerburg Park and in Hersey. From 7 to 9 p.m. there also is a Crossroads Picnic Concert at Rambadt Park.

The softball tournaments resume bright and early at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital 5K and Walk is set to start at the hospital with the kids dash at 8:30 a.m., the 5K race at 9 a.m. and the walk at 9:05 a.m.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. a car show will line Upton Avenue, Eads said. There also will be a vintage street market during that time at the intersection of Upton Avenue and Higbee Street.

“At the street market you’ll find painted signs, repurposed objects and furniture, hand soaps and some vintage items,” Eads said.

Throughout Saturday at Westerburg Park there will be numerous festivities for little ones with the children’s carnival, a safety fun zone sponsored by Tubelite, a craft table, face painting and more.

The Crossroads Celebration winds down Sunday with the completion of the softball tournament. There also will be Praise in the Park at 6 p.m. with a cookout at Rambadt Park.

“A lot volunteers and organizations pulled together, working for months and months planning the Great American Crossroads Celebration," Eads said. “When we get to the final weekend and there’s good weather and it all works out, it’s nice to see the rewards of all of that planning.”
