GFWC hosts annual beer, wine festival

REED CITY — Connoisseurs of brewed and fermented adult beverages will have the opportunity to taste a variety of flavors at this year’s Autumn Beer and Wine Festival, hosted by members of the General Federation of Women’s Club.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Reed City VFW Post No. 2964, located on 129 E. Osceola Ave.

"We're looking forward to a full house and for the community to come out and learn what the GFWC is all about," said GFWC member Shelly Scharlow.

Ticket prices include beverage tasting and the opportunity to bid on items in a silent auction, featuring between 15 and 20 items up for grabs. Italian-themed food also will be available, with a selection including meatballs, baked ravioli, bruschetta, manicotti and desserts.

Scharlow said many of the beers and wines will be from local breweries and wineries, which is a reason the event is so popular.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the GFWC, an organization that strives to make the community a better place. The group raises money for local nonprofits including Women’s Information Services, Inc., the Reed City Library, the Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center and the Hersey House of Hope, and collects funds and clothing for Katie’s Kloset, which provides clothing for elementary students in need. The GFWC is always looking for new members.

"The event is a lot of fun," Scharlow said. "I enjoy serving and visiting with everyone."

Tickets are available at Nica's Boutique, State Farm, D&E Supply Co., Pere Marquette Catering, from any GFWC member or at the door the night of the event for an additional cost. There also are tickets available for individuals who do not want to sample drinks or who are under 21.
