G.T. Norman secretary receives OPIE award
REED CITY — Working in education can be a thankless job. However, occasionally teachers, administrators, faculty and support staff are recognized for their hard work, which was the case for Angela Cornell.
Cornell, G.T. Norman Elementary secretary, was nominated for and recently received the school district’s support staff Outstanding Person in Education (OPIE) award. Support staff, teachers, friends of education and more can be nominated for the award.
“This is quite an honor,” said Reed City Area Public Schools Superintendent Myra Munroe. “Angie treats the students as if they are her own kids and the staff as her family.”
G.T. Norman Principal DeAnna Goodman echoed the statement.
“It is great to recognize someone who dedicates so much time and energy to the students, staff and the community,” she said.
Cornell began her career 18 years ago as a para-professional and became school secretary in 2003, according to a press release from the school. While she may spend part of her day answering phone calls, Cornell said she does a little bit of everything, from counseling to administering first aid or acting as a janitor every so often.
“It’s nice to know my coworkers recognize the difficult job the secretaries do every day,” she said. “It’s nice to recognize my last 20 years has meant something here.”
