G.T. Norman hosts Kindergarten Round-Up this month

REED CITY — The skills learned in kindergarten are building blocks to help students be successful throughout their educational careers.

Reed City Public Schools annual Kindergarten Round-up will be held on Tuesday, March 25, at G.T. Norman Elementary School. Student’s last names ending A-L will be held at 5:30 p.m. Student’s last names ending M-Z will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Kindergarten Round-up is a family’s opportunity to experience some of a kindergartener’s typical day, pre-register for school, meet teachers and tour classrooms. Also, an overview of the kindergarten curriculum and layout of the school will be presented, kindergarten readiness will be discussed and parents will be provided with resources to help prepare their child for that exciting first day of school.

To be eligible for Kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year, children must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 1, 2014. To pre-register a child in kindergarten, parents must bring a certified (original) copy of the child’s birth certificate and an updated immunization record. A social security card is optional.

“If the children have never been in a school setting before, it’s a great opportunity to visit the school," said DeAnna Goodman, a kindergarten teacher at G.T. Norman Elementary. "I think the first year of kindergarten is a really exciting time for families, but along with the excitement comes some anxiety. Kindergarten Round-up helps initiate the partnership between the school and the home.”

Information packets will be given to let parents know what they need to do to prepare their children for school. In kindergarten, children will learn many concepts and skills that will help them become successful learners. It is also a place where they will begin to develop into good citizens.

G.T. Norman offers a complete kindergarten curriculum including language arts and reading, math, science and social studies, computer technology, art, music and physical education. The curriculum is very important because it is during this grade level where children are exposed to much of the content and skills that will be developed throughout their academic career. Teachers at G.T. Norman use field trips, whole and small group instruction, learning centers, use of books, music and hands-on activities to offer varied instruction to their students. Instructional reading interventions are also provided to all students through the LEAP program. During LEAP instructions, students learn such as valuable pre-reading and phonics skills to help them be successful early learners.

K1, a program for children that are age eligible for kindergarten, but may need the gift of another year to develop their confidence and be successful in school, also is offered. Universal breakfast, lunch and on-site before and after school care is available to all students.

The staff at G.T. Norman is eager to make a difference in the lives of their students. For more information, visit reedcity.k12.mi.us or call (231) 832-5548.
