Fundraiser promotes shared love of Reed City library

REED CITY — Fitness and a love of the library come together for a fun event to benefit the Reed City Area District Library.

The sixth annual Love Your Library Walk will begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, at Reed City High School. Participants will trek through the school hallways, which will be available for jogging or walking.

"It's a fun event," said library director Heather Symon Bassett. "All ages can participate, so it's a great family event. Strollers are welcome and you can walk or jog as little or as much as you like."

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward the library's renovation project at its new site, located on the south side of Reed City on Chestnut Street. The project is expected to be complete in May and the library will move into the new facility between May and June.

The Love Your Library Walk also can be used for individuals looking to continue their New Year's resolution to get in shape, Symon Bassett said.

"The walk encourages fitness and socialization with other library supporters for a good cause," she added. "If you're trying to get a number of those daily steps in for your pedometer or Fitbit, this is a good way to do it. It's an opportunity to tie in your personal fitness goals with a good cause."

To donate, individuals can sponsor a library staff walker, become a sponsored walker themselves with a per-lap donation, or can stop into the high school to join the walkers with a one-time donation. Those who wish to donate, but not walk, also are welcome to drop off donations at the event.

Friendly competition, such as walking more laps or raising more money, also helps spur on fun and donations.

"It would be great if we can raise $1,000, but I don't see why we couldn't raise more," Symon Bassett added.
