Forest Service employee recognized as top fire management officer

CADILLAC — A Marion man has been named the Fire Management Officer of the Year by the Eastern Region of the U.S. Forest Service. 

Chris Peterson is a fire staff officer on the Huron-Manistee National Forests. He works in the Supervisors Office in Cadillac.

Peterson’s leadership skills, professionalism and commitment to Fire and Aviation Management are recognized throughout the fire-fighting community. He is known for ability to build relationships and create a positive work environment with integrity and respect. 

Peterson is able to weigh risk in such a manner that fuel targets are achieved through prescribed fires while simultaneously managing wildfires within a highly complex, politically charged environment.

Peterson supports regional efforts within the Forest Service and the larger fire-fighting community by hosting and organizing regional meetings. Various regional and national committees depend on his skills and knowledge

On his home unit, he works tirelessly to train employees, providing opportunities for professional growth.
