Fishing contest under way
BALDWIN — Steelhead action in Lake County remains an intriguing proposition for anglers.
Doug Loomis, of Ed’s Sport Shop in Baldwin, reports so far the steelhead run has been excellent.”
Anglers are getting fish of good size. He adds anglers should try beads, spawn, wax worms and jigs.
“We need more rain to get the fish in,” Loomis said. “What we’ve got hasn’t been enough to up the river. It would bring more fish in.”
Loomis noted the annual Troutarama fishing contest which started on Jan. 1 continues through the Wednesday of Troutarama weekend, which is July 19-22.
The contest has two age groups 14 and under and 15 and over. It’s $25 for the largest fish in each category. Anglers can enter as often as they like.
Only fresh fish can be entered and the fish must be caught in Lake County. Participants can register at Ed’s Sport Shop, Baldwin Bait & Tackle and Pere Marquette River Lodge.
Categories are rainbow trout, brown trout, largemouth bass, northern pike, perch, bluegill, brook trout, smallmouth bass, walleye and crappie. A first prize is awarded in each category. There’s a $100 grand prize to the largest fish closest to the current state record in any category.
