REED CITY — In an effort to increase safety for children, a fingerprinting and identification event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Reed City Fire Department, located on Morse Street.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Gary Montague, a Reed City firefighter, noting his wife originally thought of the event. “It’ll make the community more safe and it’ll help us too if we’re ever in the situation where we need to find a child.”

He said fingerprints, a photograph and other information about the child will be placed on an identification card and on a CD and given to the child’s parent or guardian. Those items will help provide emergency personnel with vital information in case of an emergency such as a missing person’s case. The information can mean a lot when searching and spreading the word in that situation, Montague added.

The event is free of charge, and attendees will have the opportunity to look at a number of fire trucks as well.
