Events set to commemorate those who sacrificed on Memorial Day

OSCEOLA COUNTY – For some it is just a day off of work.

For others it serves as an opportunity to gather with friends and kick off the summer season.

But for all, it is a chance to remember those who lost their lives protecting the United States of America.

Various events in Osceola County will take place on Memorial Day, inviting community members to gather in honor of those who died in service to their country.

  • Reed City community members will commemorate the day with a Memorial Day parade. The parade will start at 9 a.m. at the Reed City Depot.

The parade route will head west on Upton Avenue toward the cemetery, with the Reed City High School Marching Band performing during the event.

  • Evart residents will unite at 10 a.m. for a brief ceremony at Guyton Park, located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Main Street. The park was established in honor of Joseph W. Guyton, the first American killed on German soil in World War I.

Following a short service under the auspices of local veterans organizations, a parade will make its way to the Muskegon River Bridge where another short memorial will be held. The crowd is then invited to assemble at Forest Hill Cemetery for a final salute and ceremony.

  • The Commission on Aging will hold a barbecue on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Tustin mealsite, located at 231 S. Neilson Street in Tustin. For more information see the article in this issue of the Herald Review.
  • A Memorial Day service honoring fallen veterans will be held at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Monument on Main Street in Marion.
  • A flea market will be held in the Evart Air Industrial Park  from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
