Evart woman dies in ATV accident
EVART — One woman died after an ATV rolled over Saturday evening south of Evart.
Richelle Lynn Root, 30, Fallbrok, Calif., was driving an ATV on private property near 90th Avenue and 1 Mile Road at 5:25 p.m. in Evart Township. Root and witnesses at the scene said the vehicle was near a sand pit when it overturned, according to a Michigan State Police press release. Root was not injured in the accident.
The backseat passenger, Chastity Nandine Naranjo, 45, of Evart, sustained multiple injuries, police said. Osceola County EMS transported Naranjo from the scene and she was later airlifted to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. She died from her injuries on the way to the hospital.
Police believe alcohol is a factor in the crash and said neither Root nor Naranjo was wearing a helmet. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Osceola County Sheriff's Department, Evart Fire and Rescue and Osceola County EMS.
