Evart welcomes downtown equestrian shop

EVART — According to Evart resident Wendy Lee Adams, horse people are a different breed.

"If you're a horse person, it's in your blood," she said. "It never goes away and you're always drawn to them."

Horses and her love for them are the driving force behind Adams' new store, The Spur Shack, which offers an abundance of equine products for the novice and experienced rider. The shop is located at 226 N. Main St. and has been welcomed with open arms in its first month of business. Though she has a background as a legal secretary, horses have been a part of her entire life.

"Horses have been my passion since forever," Adams said. "I grew up around horses and I have three now."

As a child, Adams spent the summers at her grandparent's home in Evart, where her grandfather raised and raced horses. As she grew, she lived in Colorado, then moved back to Michigan and settled in Clare. Now she has returned to Evart to live and to run The Spur Shack.

From top to bottom, the business offers a selection of everything for equestrians, including grooming supplies, equipment, apparel, accessories, horse health products and gift items. Adams also wants to provide a limited supply of youth equestrian consignment items specifically for an individual looking to begin or advance their equine skills.

In addition, Adams is offering "newbie" and "smarty" classes concerning all things horses for $100. The classes, which focus on horse knowledge and care, are two hours per week, with one class at the business and one class at Adams' farm working closely with the animal.

Sparking interest in local youth is another goal Adams wants to fulfill. She looks to get involved with 4-H equestrian clubs and help in any way she can.

"My goal is to help kids enjoy this passion that I love so much," she said. "I think it's really important to keep these kids involved with the programs. When I decided to open this business, I wanted to do it here and help the Evart community."
