LEROY — Pine River opened its volleyball season playing in the Traverse City Central Invitational on Friday and went 1-4.

The Bucks lost to Waterford Lady of Our Lakes 25-23, 25-16; lost to Midland High 25-15, 25-10; lost to Caledonia 25-9, 25-12, defeated Benzie Central 25-20, 25-19 and lost to Waterford Lady of Our Lakes 25-20, 25-20.

For the Bucks, KayLee Goodman had 36 kills 38 digs, 9 aces and 6 blocks; Emma Whitley had 20 kills, 40 digs, 43 assists and five blocks; Parker Moores added 19 kills and 13 aces; Sophie Johnson had 13 kills, 37 digs and 71 assists; Mackenzie Denton had 14 kills and 31 digs and Cayla Trowbridge added 35 digs.

“We knew going into this tournament that it would be an opportunity to see where our strengths are and the areas we still need work in,” Pine River coach Jana Dennis said. “For the majority of this team, it was their first varsity level experience. We handled our slumps well and the team showed a lot of resilience in overcoming some big deficits during some of the games.

“There a couple times we were down 8-20 and even though we couldn’t pull out those wins we cut the margins to within 5 or 6 points. I thought Emma and Sophie got better and better as the day went on. They are both fighters and weren’t going down without a fight. KayLee did a great job of talking and encouraging everyone throughout the day. We left this tourney with a small list of things to focus on this week in practice before returning to competition in the Kalkaska quad on Thursday.”
