Evart man arrested for first-degree child abuse

EVART — An Evart man is in police custody for allegedly abusing and seriously injuring a 19-month-old child.

Just after midnight Thursday, troopers from the Michigan State Police Mount Pleasant Post Reed City detachment were dispatched to a residence in the city of Evart to investigate an incident of child abuse.

An Evart woman returned home and found her 19-month-old child unresponsive with severe injuries. After investigation, the mother's boyfriend, a 20-year-old Evart man, was arrested for first-degree child abuse. His name will not be released until after his arraignment.

The child was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital and then airlifted to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. The child is undergoing surgery for life-threatening injuries, and currently listed in critical condition.
