EVART — Evart’s young wrestling program continues to make huge leaps and bounds, including the implementation of a strong summer schedule, Coach Ryan Hopkins confirmed this week.

He’s had 12 to 14 student-athletes at his summer sessions, which have been conducted at the high school gymnasium.

“We do weight-lifting from 6:30 to 7:30 (a.m.) and then open mats 7:30 to 8:30,” Hopkins said. “We lift three days a week and have open mats once a week. We started in about the middle of June. We’ll go until about the end of July.”

It’s a young program, but the summer schedule “is a little more intense,” Hopkins said. “We’re getting more numbers. It’s all high school kids.”

The Wildcats started the high school program five seasons ago and have continually bene making progress. In the past, they also had some summer sessions at Pine River.

One of the top Evart wrestlers returning will be Reese Ransom, who will be a junior. Last season, Ransom was 37-12 at 140 pounds, second in the conference, second at district, third in the regional and a state qualifier.
