Evart, Reed City to host music in the park

OSCEOLA COUNTY – The sound of summer is here once again.

It’s time to dust off the lawn chairs and gather the family for the summer musical series of concerts starting soon in Reed City and Evart.

Beginning with the Michigan Mafia String Band serenading crowds from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Rambadt Park in Reed City, a weekly concert will take place in the park or at the depot.

“The (Michigan Mafia String Band) features some toe tapping blue grass music for all ages,” said Ron Marek, Reed City manager.

In Evart, musical festivities will kick off with Rich Eddy’s Rockin’ Oldies performing from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on June 14 at the Evart depot.

“People can bring their own chairs and picnic supplies. We’ll have picnic tables out for folks to picnic on. It should be a fun evening,” said Al Weinberg, Evart Downtown Development Authority director. “We’re going to try to make it cool.”

The series, sponsored by the Evart DDA, will be held at the Evart Depot and performances will be held on various days in June, July and August.

Throughout the summer, community members can hear music from Picks and Sticks Stringband, The Swing Kings, Rock Harley as Johnny Cash and Shout! Beatles tribute band, which will play on July 3 at the fairgrounds.

“They look like the Beatles and they sound like the Beatles and they’ll be playing from 7 p.m. until dusk,” said Connie Douglas, Evart Chamber of Commerce president.

For a complete schedule visit www.evart.org and click on “Downtown Summer Musical Series” under the “Tourism” tab.

Organizers hope around 100 individuals will attend each performance.

Reed City’s concerts will be held every Saturday this summer and will switch from Rambadt Park to the Reed City Depot, in order to establish the depot as a hub of community activity.

Marek said he is working to secure organizations to donate snacks and beverages for each Saturday’s concert. If any organization is interested in supporting the endeavor, contact the city manager at (231) 832-2245.

Schedules are available around the city, including at the Reed City Hall and Chamber of Commerce office at the depot.

Along with the music in the park series, Reed City will host a jazz band every Friday at Rambadt Park starting June 22.

“The recreation commission provides and makes these activities available to the citizens of the community,” Marek said. “We’d really like to encourage more people to come.”

Each event is free to the public and individuals should bring a lawn chair.

The Reed City Music and Art in the Park/Depot program is made possible through funds from the Reed City Downtown Development Authority, Osceola County Community Foundation, Wheatland Music Organization, the City of Reed City and Yoplait.

Evart’s Musicale Series is sponsored by the Osceola County Community Foundation, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and National Endowment for the Arts.
