Evart, Pine River hosting kindergarten roundups
OSCEOLA COUNTY — Now is the time for parents of young children to register their child in kindergarten, and both Evart and Pine River districts are welcoming families to see what their school of choice is all about.
Evart's Kindergarten Roundup event is slated from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at the elementary school building, located at 515 N. Cedar St. The Pine River Kindergarten Roundup will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 24, at the elementary school, located at 408 W Gilbert St.
To be eligible for kindergarten for the 2015-16 school year, children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. Parents should bring an original copy of the child’s birth certificate, an updated immunization record and a driver’s license or proof of residency to enroll the child in school.
This year's theme in Evart is "Under the Big Top."
"It's important to help students get started on the right path before school," said Evart Elementary School Principal Sarah Bailey. "It makes the kindergarten adjustment so much better."
The roundup will begin in the gymnasium with an overview of the school and its environment. A tour of the building and the opportunity to meet school staff will take place. The evening also will include a number of fun events that are free of charge, including bus rides for upcoming kindergartners and their families, a photo booth, a gift bag with supplies, a circus-themed dinner, make-and-take crafts, and vision, hearing and speech screenings. Each child will receive a free gift as well, Bailey said.

The Pine River event is appointment-based only and will provide time for parents to fill out paperwork, and for both students and parents to take a tour of the school and go for a short bus ride. School staff also will take time to get to know each child through a quick question and answer session.
"It gives the families a chance to get familiar with the building and it also gives us a chance to become familiar with the child," said Pine River Area Elementary School Principal Jaime Heuker. "It's a time to ease the worries they might have."

Although the roundups are geared toward making the students feel comfortable inside the school walls, the event also eases the minds of parents who are nervous sending their child to school for the first time, Bailey said.
"I think when parents get to meet staff and find out they are friendly and care about the students, it helps to set the atmosphere," she added.
