EVART — A team of dedicated students are celebrating their success at the Odyssey of the Mind state competition, which took place at Thornapple-Kellogg High School in Grand Rapids earlier this month.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program which provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and about 25 other countries participate in the program.

Team members inlcude David Keilman, Laura Junker, Sydney VanBuren, Grace Green, Emeili Bengry, Michaela Quist and Sarah Woods. Their coach is Nancy Smith.

During competition, teams are scored for their long-term problem solution, how well they solve a "spontaneous" problem on the spot, and "style" — the elaboration of their long-term problem solution. In the end, the Evart Middle School OM team placed third in the state of Michigan for Division II.
