EVART -- The Evart Police Department has announced the cancellation of the 2020 National Night Out event.

"The National Night Out organization is urging participating police departments to delay the event, normally held the first Tuesday in August, until the first Tuesday in October. Knowing the unpredictability of Michigan weather in October, we have regrettably decided to cancel the event for 2020," a post on the police department Facebook page read.

The option of hosting a block party this summer was explored, but due to the current executive orders in place to control the spread of the coronavirus, it was determined it would not be possible, the post continued.

"We appreciate your support of this difficult decision, and look forward to hosting the event in 2021," it said.

Osceola County has seen a significant increase in reported cases of COVID-19 in the past few weeks, resulting in other event cancellations.

A spokesperson for the Big Rapids Police Department confirmed that they have also canceled the National Night Out activities.
