REED CITY -- Ebels General Store will hold a ground-breaking ceremony at the site of the planned new store in Reed City at 5 p.m.,Thursday, Aug. 22.

"The main purpose of the ground-breaking is to announce to the public that the Ebels store is really going to happen," said Reed City city manager Ron Howell.

"We are excited, as a family, to come to Reed City and we are looking forward to seeing everybody who can make it Thursday," Tom Ebels said.

Reed City city council approved a resolution establishing the Ebels property as a commercial rehabilitation district at its meeting Aug. 17.

A commercial rehabilitation certificate provides a property tax exemption for qualified food establishments that are rehabilitated.

Exemptions are approved for a term of 1 to 10 years, as determined by the local unit of government. Under the exemption, the taxable value of the property is frozen at the previous year's assessment for the duration of the exemption period.

The Ebels family, owners of Ebels General Store in Falmouth, purchased the former Vic's supermarket property on South Chestnut Street in December, with plans to put a full service grocery store there.

With delays in construction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the decision to build a new structure rather than refurbish the old one, the process has taken longer than originally planned.

Demolition of the former structure took place in July, and Ebels said they now have the crews and materials ready to go to begin construction of the new store as soon as possible.

They plan to open the new store in February 2021.
