BIG RAPIDS — Mosquito repellent and tall boots won’t be necessary during an upcoming bear hunt at Eastwood Early Childhood Center.

Parents and youngsters throughout Mecosta and Osceola counties are invited to follow the tale “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt,” by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxbury, during an interactive story walk from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, at Eastwood, located at 410 Third St., Big Rapids. Walking tacos, water and cookies will be available and families will leave with a free book.

“What we’ve done is focus on family involvement in the community in both counties,” said Great Start Coordinator Jesi Wimmer. “Each page of the story will be interactive. It will come to life — so to say. Families will experience what is on the pages.”

Wimmer noted each stop along the story walk, such as walking through long grass and a cave, will have helpful reading tips to encourage literacy.

“Just by opening a book, parents are helping their kiddos,” Wimmer said. “We encourage families to come and experience not only what the interactive book walk has in store, but also to engage with the family during this family involvement night.”

Wimmer said families should use caution when approaching the childhood center and parking, in case children get away from their parents. She also encourages families to come early to get the full experience.
