Downtown event creates fusion of retail and the arts

EVART — Main Street will be alive with art, music, shopping, games and more during this year's annual Chalk Art Festival and Sidewalk Sales in Evart.

"This is part of our Main Street Mixer program," said Evart Downtown Development Director Al Weinberg. "It's a chance to get the community out on Main Street, see what's going on and see what our businesses offer."

The downtown event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 28, and feature sales from local businesses. In the past, the 2-hour shopping opportunity attracted hundreds of eager customers.

Attendees of the Chalk Art Festival and Sidewalk Sales can peruse the Evart Farmer's Market that same morning and to also have lunch at one of the local restaurants, Weinberg said.

"Every dollar spent in town has more of chance to be recirculated in town," he added. "That's what makes the local economy work and make others think maybe they should open up a store downtown, too."

Residents and business owners are encouraged to decorate the sidewalk areas on North Main Street with provided chalk, creating their own masterpiece or simple family-friendly designs. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to play games and win prizes.

Live music from the Kari Lynch Band will entertain shoppers and artists through the event, but in case of rain, the band will play at Crossroads Community Church.
