REED CITY — Coffee-lovers, rejoice. A Biggby Coffee franchise is on its way to Reed City, and the owners couldn’t be more excited to share their excitement with the community.

Kelly Prielipp and Sonya Bielecki first met through a mutual employment in 2010. The pair of avid coffee drinkers fell in love and got married shortly thereafter. For years, the couple has enjoyed sipping on a hot cup of joe from Biggby Coffee.

For Bielecki, there's nothing better than a warm cup of Biggby's caramel mellow to start her day, and when it's in season, Prielipp can be found enjoying a spice pumpkin latte.

In 2011, Prielipp and Bielecki attended a Biggby Discovery Days event, which is where potential future owners can learn about the franchise and the requirements of owning one.

“(Opening a location) has always been in the back of our minds a little bit,” Prielipp, a 1987 Reed City High graduate, said.

It was time to put the plan into action.

“I told Sonya, ‘Reed City is such a cute town — how can we help?’” Prielipp recalled.

“I think we both want to be a part of the revitalization in Reed City, and there’s no better way of doing that than through a Biggby Coffee,” Bielecki said.

Prielipp and Bielecki began preparations to bring the franchise to Reed City. The couple recently gained a lot of popularity from the Reed City community after going public with their announcement on social media. Bielecki shared the news in a Facebook group called, "Let's talk about Reed City" and the post went viral, collecting over 500 reactions, nearly 300 positive comments, and 200-plus shares.

“I think there’s no better job in the world than to make people smile with their favorite cup of joe,” Bielecki said.

When it comes to a location for their new shop, Prielipp and Bielecki have an eye on a specific spot. However, there is a plan for a potential backup in the event their first choice doesn’t work out.

“It’s all dependent on Biggby,” Prielipp said of the location selection. “You have to get the site approved through Biggby.”

“There’s a lot of red tape to go through,” Bielecki added.

The couple is waiting for a final approval before announcing where in Reed City the new Biggby Coffee location will sit. But, Bielecki and Prielipp said they plan on keeping the community updated on their progress each step of the way — including live video updates on social media.

“We know the community wants it so we’re acting as fast as we can,” Bielecki said.

Prielipp said Biggby Coffee gives potential franchise owners one year to get a location approved by the company and then one year to get the store open and operating.

With a new establishment comes new jobs. Bielecki will be managing the store and Prielipp will be working behind the scenes, and they will be looking for employees to help staff the new coffee shop.

Bielecki and Prielipp said they would love to be open by May or June 2022, but noted a realistic opening date would be sometime in the fall.

“We had a feeling people wanted a Biggby, but didn’t know to what extent,” Bielecki said. “I think it’s been amazing. The community is ready for this type of business to be local.”

“We want to open a Biggby Coffee to help build the community,” she added. “It’s all about loving the people, and they will come.”
