Council appoints interim clerk

REED CITY — Jackie Beam was appointed interim clerk in Reed City at the council meeting Thursday.

Beam served as the city’s deputy clerk, but after the sudden Feb. 3 retirement of Clerk Jane Wekenmen, Beam had been carrying out the clerk’s duties.

As the city’s interim Clerk, Beam administrated the presidential primary election Tuesday.

City Treasurer Barb Westerburg has been assisting Beam with office work and they have both been working overtime since Wekenman’s departure. The city plans to post the position of full-time clerk in hopes of hiring someone in the next six months.

“If we get in a bind, I will possibly look at some part-time help,” said Reed City manager Ron Marek.

The council also voted to increase Beam’s wage by $3 per hour to reflect the increased duties and time requirements of her new position.

“I felt she had to be compensated,” Marek said.

In other business, the council:

  • discussed the possibility of posting signs at the south and north sides of town on Chestnut Street that label the street as a three-lane road.
  • approved the revised articles of incorporation for the Greater Reed City Area Recreation Authority
  • appointed Dave Belden as the six month temporary Department of Public Works Operator.
  • approved a request for grant funding from the Osceola County Community Foundation for Music and Art in the Park, Wheatland Festival and Rambadt Park maintenance.

The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 26 at Reed City City Hall.
