Construction on schedule at new Reed City library

REED CITY — As the months tick down to June, renovations continues to progress within the new location of the Reed City Area District library.

According to Christine Cox, library board president, construction is going smoothly inside the building, located at 829 S. Chestnut St.

"Inside, all of the extra walls have been removed, footings have been dug for the new ceiling support posts, holes for the new doors have been cut and some of the stud framing has begun," she said. "The framing is holding up the roof until the footings can be poured and the posts set. It's exciting and the building looks so big now."

Some exterior details, including the chimney and air conditioner, have been removed, Cox added.

The project began in October and is expected to be complete by May 1, as the library's current space in the Annex building on Upton Avenue must be vacated by the time the lease expires in June.

The entire project will cost about $480,000 including contingencies, which gives the library much needed additional space for staff offices, a community room, children’s area, teen area and computer room. In addition to a loan, funding has come from a variety of organizations and entities, including the Osceola County Community Foundation, the Great Lakes Energy People Fund, the Reed City Downtown Development Authority and Tublite Inc. Fundraisers also are helping keep costs at a minimum, and the library board saved additional funds by salvaging metal for scrap money, re-using undamaged ceiling tiles and only knocking down necessary walls.

However, Cox said the board is still looking for people to donate through a number of opportunities and upcoming events, such as the Love Your Library Walk on Feb. 11, the donor bookshelf recognition fundraiser and more.

"If you support the library, everybody wins," Cox added. "It's exciting and so neat to see this project move forward and the community support has been wonderful."
