OSCEOLA COUNTY — First celebrated as Decoration Day shortly after the Civil War, Memorial Day has become the day many Americans remember and honor the men and women who have died while serving in the armed forces.

Continuing longstanding traditions, communities throughout Osceola County have announced special ceremonies to observe Memorial Day, Monday, May 29.


Hosted by Evart VFW Post. No. 7979, the Memorial Day ceremony begins with a service at Evart's Guyton Park, located on the corner of Main and Fifth streets.

The service will include music from the Evart High School Band, a special message and 21-gun-salute. From there, a procession will parade south on Main Street to the U.S. 10 bridge, where a wreath will be placed into the river.

The procession will then continue to Forest Hill Cemetery and conclude at VFW Post No. 7979, 4681 85th Ave.

The annual Evart Chamber Flea Market also is taking place this weekend at the airport. The flea market will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 26, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.

Residents throughout the Marion area are invited to the Veterans Memorial Day Service at the Veterans Monument on Main Street. The service begins at 10 a.m.

The Gissiwas Creek 2017 Pow Wow also will take place on Monday to honor veterans. It is slated to last throughout the day at 13819 N. Fifth Ave.

Reed City

The 2017 Memorial Day Parade in Reed City will take place at 9 a.m. Line-up begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Reed City Depot.

The parade will travel west on Upton Avenue to the Osceola County Courthouse, where a brief ceremony is scheduled. Music will be played by the Reed City High School Band.

The parade will continue to and conclude at Woodland Cemetery.
