City of Evart hosts tree planting party

Many trees lost in storm replaced

EVART -- The City of Evart held its second tree planting party of the year on September 22, again partnering with the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly and Lume Cannabis Company.

Volunteers from the three entities planted 60 native trees at Riverside West, the City well field, and at private residences along N. Main Street, N. River Street and Hemlock Street.

This was a timely event, as on Sept. 7 Evart lost many mature trees to an extraordinary windstorm. North Main Street and West Second took the hardest hit, and 23 trees were planted to replace those that were lost at that intersection.

This effort will continue in the spring throughout the city. Anyone that lost a tree and would like a replacement should contact the city clerk at (231) 250-1432 or cityclerk@evart.org.

Volunteers will plant, water, mulch and stake the trees, and the homeowner is then responsible for watering the tree(s) for two years or until the tree is established.

The city is very grateful to MRWA for providing the trees, mulch, stakes, tiedowns and planting support, and to Lume for supplying 60 volunteers to do the labor. Several Evart residents stepped up to haul mulch and assist with the overall organization of the project.

This is the third tree planting effort and to date, a total of 154 trees have been planted throughout the city. Another 81 trees remain to be planted.
