Charity golf event hosted by AMVETS

HERSEY –  Veterans, bikers and golfers are invited to participate in a golf tournament hosted by AMVETS Riders Chapter No. 1988.

The shot gun start golf tournament will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, at the Spring Valley Golf Course in Hersey. Those participating must register by 9:30 a.m. on the 18th. The cost is $240 per team of four and includes a cart for 18 holes and food.

“Proceeds from the event go to helping local AMVETS and veterans,” said Jeff Smith of AMVETS Riders Chapter No. 1988. “This year there’s an exceptional case we want to give money to. The original AMVETS post in Missouri was flooded, and some of the money we earn will go toward helping them buy new property and rebuild.”

Smith explained the flooded post is AMVETS Post No. 1, and it has significance as the birthplace of the AMVETS. The money toward new property and building materials will help them move out of the flood plain where they were located, he said.

“We focus on finding local veterans to give to,” he said. “One example of a veteran we helped out recently: We bought a freezer and furniture for him and his family because their house burned down. So we try to help out locally as much as we can.”

Hot dogs will be offered on the course and a steak and potato dinner will be served after the tournament.

A raffle and proximity prizes also will be offered for participants.
