REED CITY — A preliminary examination is scheduled for an Ashmun School teacher charged in a criminal sexual conduct case involving a student.

Janet Marie Brown, 32, will appear in Osceola County’s 77th District Court at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 28.

During a preliminary examination, the prosecutor must prove that a crime was committed and that there is probable cause to believe the defendant committed the crime. Following the hearing, the judge may bind the case over for trial in circuit court.

Brown is charged with three counts of third degree criminal sexual conduct stemming from a sexual relationship she had with a student at Ashmun School at Eagle Village in Hersey, an adjudicated youth facility for troubled teens. The felony charges hold a maximum sentence of 15 years.

Brown was put on administrative leave on Nov. 21 for “improper communication” with a student outside of school. Pending the outcome of the case, the MOISD Board of Education will determine Brown’s employment status with the district.
