Artists invited to chalk downtown Evart Monday

EVART – The sidewalks in downtown Evart will be a sea of color Monday as the Downtown Development Authority teams up with Movies N More to host the first Evart Chalk Festival.

“We’re asking people to come help us color Evart,” said Al Weinberg, DDA Director. “We’re expecting to see a lot of rainbows and sunsets.”

The festival will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 13 on Main Street in Evart.

A project of the shop local committee, organizers hope the event will serve as a fun way to draw people to the streets of Evart. DDA staff will facilitate games such as six square, tic-tac-toe and hopscotch with the center of the action being in front of Movies N More. All of the festivities will be held on Main Street north of US 10.

“We’re providing all the chalk,” Weinberg said. “We think a lot of kids will come, but I also know there are a lot of adults who like to draw.”

Artists don’t need any special talent, Weinberg said, as the event is more focused on fun than skill.

The idea for the event came after DDA staff talked with Missy Barnett, owner of Movies N More, and researched events that had been done in the past to bring people to downtown Evart. Movies N More, which rents movies and sells craft and art supplies, also will be the location of the Monday cash mob, a project to increase business at select downtown Evart businesses each Monday during the summer.

In the event of rain, the festival will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 14.

Weinberg hopes the fun event draws between 50 and 100 artists, young and old.

“It’s free. It’s awesome,” he said. “These people are gifting art to the community and the community can enjoy it.”
