Apartment building fire in Reed City displaces residents

REED CITY — An early morning fire at a Reed City apartment complex is under investigation.

The Reed City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 5:52 a.m. on Sunday at Crossroads Apartments, located at 848 S. Chestnut St.

On scene, firefighters found heavy fire coming from building "D." Crews worked the scene for several hours, clearing the scene at 10:38 a.m. The building ultimately sustained extensive fire and water damage.

The Hersey Township Fire Department, Lincoln Township Fire Department, City of Big Rapids Department of Public Safety – Fire Division and Evart Area Fire Department assisted Reed City firefighters with the blaze.

All occupants were able to safely exit the building and no one was harmed. Around 40 people were impacted by the fire. Residents were transported via school bus to the Reed City Fire Department, where further arrangements were made by the Red Cross. Also assisting was Osceola County EMS, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Reed City Area Public Schools and the Reed City Department of Public Works.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police and Reed City Police Department.
