Annual car show and cruise returns to Evart

EVART — Labor Day Weekend is the prime time for the annual Evart Car Cruise and Car Show, and Evart Car Club President Jim Rohen is looking forward to both.

"I'm always excited to get one more year in," he said. "The cruise is fun and we usually get between 150 and 230 cars at the park for the show."

The cruise will take place on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Evart Municipal Airport. Sign-up begins at 4:30 p.m. and the actual drive begins at 5 p.m. Drivers will travel to Eight Point Lake near the Osceola and Clare County border, then return to the Evart Moose Lodge by 7:30 p.m. It's free to participate and Rohen believes it's just as fun to watch.

"We drive out to Eight Point Lake and the people out there line the road and watch, so everyone gets a chance to be in the spotlight," he added. "This year, we're going to stop the cruise before the lake, so the residents who live out there and own cars can come and join us."

The main event, the car show, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Riverside Park in Evart. Those with show cars can begin registering at 7 a.m. and free public viewing begins at 9 a.m. One of the largest shows in the area, the event normally attracts hundreds of car enthusiasts and thousands of onlookers.

"We've consistently had one of the cheaper car shows around for people who want to register," Rohen said. "We have goodie bags for the first 175 participants who register, but we can make up mini bags for others. We make sure they all get something."

Classic cars of all makes, models and decades line the park, giving attendees the opportunity to view the vehicles on the inside, outside and under the hood. Car owners also will be on hand to answer questions and chat about their pride and joy.

"Our website draws a lot of people and we send out 2,500 flyers to people who have come in the past and to businesses all over the state. We'll go to other car shows and drop off 100," Rohen said. "The city also puts up a billboard and banners on U.S. 10, and sometimes we'll be on their TV ads."

Individuals who bring a car to the show have the chance to win a number of trophies and awards for various categories, including Best of Show. In addition, the event will feature a selection of vendors.
