EVART — An Alma man was charged Friday with sexually assaulting a girl in his family.

Timothy Brown, 39, was charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual assault. The victim in the case is a resident of the Evart and disclosed a sexual relationship with Brown at a doctor’s appointment. The sexual activity was said to have occurred in both Osceola and Gratiot counties.

Michigan State Police troopers from the Mount Pleasant post interviewed the victim and obtained other evidence to corroborate the likelihood of the alleged sexual relationship.

If he is convicted, this would be Brown’s second criminal sexual conduct offense. He was convicted in 1996 in Ingham County of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim to whom he was related, according to the Michigan Sex Offender Registry. He was released from prison in 2010, but part of his sentence includes being actively listed on the registry for his lifetime.

The Osceola County Prosecutor’s Office issued a warrant for Brown on Thursday, charging him with third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Brown was arrested by troopers on his way to meet with the victim. Troopers will be conducting further investigation and additional charges in Gratiot County are anticipated.

Brown remains in Osceola County Jail on a $750,00 surety bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Aug 8 in Osceola County’s 77th District Court.
